Overview
Meghalaya means “Abode of Clouds” in Sanskrit, name that perfectly fits its misty landscapes and frequent rainfall. It is home to Mawsynram, the wettest place on Earth, receiving an average of over 11,000 mm of rain annually. The state is renowned for its living root bridges, especially around Cherrapunji and Nongriat, where locals guide the roots of rubber trees to form natural, long-lasting bridges. Meghalaya has a unique matrilineal society, mainly among the Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia tribes, where lineage and inheritance pass through the mother. Music and dance are vital to its cultural identity, with traditional performances like the Wangala Dance of the Garo and Shad Suk Mynsiem of the Khasi people.
